Myths About Women's Hair Loss

There are a lot of misconceptions about thinning hair or hair loss. Let’s separate fact from fiction.

Using lots of different products helps regrow hair

FALSE

While many products might claim to help thinning hair, Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5%, is the only clinically-proven treatment for hair loss/thinning in women.

Having a baby can cause hair loss

TRUE

But not permanently. Hormonal changes after childbirth can lead to a temporary loss of hair. As hormone levels return to normal, that hair will eventually grow back.

Getting your hair cut will make your hair grow faster

FALSE

The follicles on your scalp are responsible for hair growth, so cutting the ends of your hair won’t affect how quickly your hair grows. Regardless of how much hair you cut, you will grow an average of about 1 cm of hair every month.

Young women don’t experience thinning

FALSE

Although female pattern hair loss and thinning becomes more common with age, it can begin as early as 20 and continue if left untreated.

It’s your mother’s fault

FALSE

Female pattern hair loss can come from your mother or your father’s side — and can also skip generations. So even if your mother, father, and siblings experience hair loss, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will.

Extreme stress can trigger long-term hair loss

FALSE

Extreme emotional or physical stress can cause telogen effluvium, a temporary condition that can cause increased shedding. This kind of hair loss is temporary, and your hair will begin to regrow once you return to your normal lifestyle.

Coffee on your scalp can stimulate follicle growth

FALSE

Coffee has many potential health benefits, but Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5%, is the only treatment clinically proven to help stop and even reverse hereditary hair loss.

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% is proven to regrow hair

TRUE

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% is clinically-proven to regrow hair in more than 80% of women.

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% is a hormonal treatment

FALSE

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% is a hormone-free topical treatment that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% won’t work on colour-treated hair

FALSE

Having colour-treated hair won’t impact your results. Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% works by stimulating your hair follicles, helping you grow more hair at the source — on your scalp.

All of your hair follicles are in place at birth

TRUE

From the day we are born, we have all of the hair follicles we’ll ever have. Hair follicles can become temporarily inactive and be revived, but if left untreated, they can lose their ability to grow hair completely.

The right shampoo can fix hair loss

FALSE

Some shampoos may leave your hair feeling thicker because they contain ingredients to temporary swell the hair shaft, but shampoos aren’t formulated to revive your hair follicles or to regrow your hair. Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Women’s ROGAINE®, is the only clinically proven ingredient for hair regrowth in women.

Shedding hair is abnormal

FALSE

Hair shedding is a totally normal part of your hair’s natural growth cycle. A normal scalp will shed 50–100 hairs per day. When old hairs are shed, they’re replaced with new hair. However, greater than usual shedding/thinning may be an early sign of hair loss.

Hereditary hair loss is a man’s problem

FALSE

Hereditary hair loss can affect both men and women, and is more common among women than you might think. In fact, an estimated 1 in 4 Canadian women experience hair loss.

Thinning hair only happens after menopause

FALSE

Female pattern hair loss and thinning can start at just about any point in a woman’s adult life. But it is true that hereditary hair loss becomes more common with age, and many women who experience hair loss notice a peak around the time they reach menopause.

I’m losing my hair — something is wrong with me

FALSE

Not at all. Female pattern hair loss, is caused by a combination of genetics, hormone levels, and the aging process — and is a lot more common than you might think.

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam doesn’t work

FALSE

Women’s ROGAINE® works by reviving inactive hair follicles — helping regrow fuller, thicker hair. It’s proven to regrow hair in 8 out of 10 women and, with daily use, clinically visible results can be seen as early as 4 months.

It’s too early to use Women’s ROGAINE® — my hair loss isn’t that bad

FALSE

Women’s ROGAINE® Foam 5% works by revitalizing the follicles on your scalp — helping hair regrow. Early treatment is key to preventing more hair loss and re-growing thicker hair. Your hair may respond better if you have been losing your hair for a shorter period of time.

Hair loss and thinning will just go away

SOMETIMESTRUE

Some types of hair loss are temporary and do go away on their own, such as those caused by extreme stress or childbirth. However, the most common type of hair loss stems from hereditary causes and will continue if left untreated.
