Men's Hair Loss FAQ

WHAT TO EXPECT

Since normal hair growth takes time, hair regrowth with ROGAINE® also takes time. Results will vary from person to person, but the most important thing is to be patient. Clinical studies have shown that regrowth can occur as early as 8 weeks when using Men’s ROGAINE® Foam 5%. But it may take up to 4 months for some people to start noticing results.

Your results and success will also depend on proper application and dosage — remember to apply Men’s ROGAINE® twice a day, every day, directly to the scalp. If you do not see any results after 4 months with the foam, or 1 year with the solution, speak with your doctor.

Note, those who are younger and have been losing hair for a short period of time, or have a small area of hair loss, are likely to experience the best results.

After several weeks, you should begin to notice that you're losing much less hair. You may initially see a temporary increase in shedding, but this is normal to make way for new growth. Eventually, you should begin to see new hair growth. At first it might feel soft, downy and lighter in colour than the rest of your hair, but over time this hair should thicken and blend in with the rest of your hairline.

This is totally normal, and actually a good sign. ROGAINE® products are designed to stimulate hair follicles to shift from the resting phase to the growth phase. It’s not uncommon to see a temporary increase in shedding during the first 2-6 weeks of using ROGAINE®. This occurs in some people as the new hair pushes out the older hairs. Think of it like baby teeth falling out to make room for adult teeth. This increase in shedding is only temporary and should subside with continued treatment.

Please note, however, if increased shedding continues for a duration of longer than 2 weeks, you should consult your doctor to rule out other possible causes.

No. Applying Men’s ROGAINE® more than twice a day won’t result in faster hair growth. Doing so can actually increase your risk of negative side effects. Your new hair still needs time to grow, so try to say patient.

Probably not. If treatment is stopped, you will most likely revert to your previous pattern of hair loss, including any new hair you grew back. However, if you stop using ROGAINE®, you won't be any worse off than before you started treatment.

ROGAINE® products regrow healthier and thicker looking hair. Although the earliest hair growth you see may be soft and downy, further treatment should produce new hair with the same consistency and characteristics as your natural hair.

ABOUT MEN’S ROGAINE

ROGAINE® is the first ever Health Canada approved hair regrowth treatment — clinically-proven to help reduce and reverse hair loss in men, including the progression of hereditary hair loss.

ROGAINE® is the #1 dermatologist recommended* brand for hair loss, trusted by experts across Canada.

In hereditary hair loss, a combination of heredity factors, hormones, and age can cause a progressive shrinking, or miniaturization, of certain hair follicles. This causes a shortening of the hair's growth cycle. Over time, as the active hair growth phase becomes shorter, the resting phase becomes longer — eventually resulting in no new growth at all.

ROGAINE® contains the active ingredient Minoxidil, which revitalizes hair follicles and  causes them to shift from a resting phase to an active growth phase. More follicles in the growth phase at the same time can result in thicker, fuller looking hair.

To properly open your container of ROGAINE® Foam, follow these steps:

Step 1: Use the thumb and forefinger of one hand to hold the white plastic ring securely (you'll find the white plastic ring around the neck of the container, just below the translucent cap).

Step 2: While holding the ring in place, use your other hand to twist the translucent cap until the arrow on the white plastic ring lines up with the arrow on the translucent cap.

Step 3: Tilt cap back and remove.

To properly close the container:

Step 1: Place cap on container

Step 2: Snap into place

Step 3: To make sure the cap remains child-resistant, be sure the arrows do NOT line up.

You don't have to shampoo before applying ROGAINE® but if you do, be sure your scalp is completely dry before applying, otherwise the solution could be diluted or evaporate before it has been fully absorbed.

When dispensing ROGAINE® Foam, be sure you’re holding the can vertically, straight upside down to prevent the mixture turning into a liquid. If the can is held horizontally then the propellant is released too quickly, resulting in excess minoxidil liquid at the bottom of the can.

Some people may experience a slight itchiness and other irritation on the scalp. This is usually only a temporary effect. However, if it persists, stop using ROGAINE® and see a doctor. Be sure to read the package insert before use for full product information, including possible side effects.

Hereditary hair loss is a progressive condition requiring continuous treatment. So keep using ROGAINE® for as long as you want to maintain its effect. Without regular application, you will most likely revert to the previous pattern of hair loss, including the hair you grew back.

If you haven’t seen any results after using the ROGAINE® solution for 1 year, or the ROGAINE® foam for 4 months, you should discontinue treatment and seek the advice of your doctor.

Note that use of ROGAINE® products have not been well studied in men over the age of 65 years, and the product is indicated for use in adults 18-65 years.

1 or 2 missed doses shouldn’t affect your long-term hair regrowth — provided you resume regular use. Just continue with your next regular dose, and do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

HAIR & LIFESTYLE

Sure. You can continue your hair care routine as normal, but choose your haircare products carefully. Gentle shampoos and conditioners suitable to your hair type are best, just remember to rinse them out thoroughly. If you wear product in your hair, just be sure that the ROGAINE® treatment is completely dry before applying any product.

If you’re getting your hair dyed or permed, it’s worth mentioning to your hairdresser that you're using ROGAINE®. Explain that any massaging of the scalp should be gentle to minimize hair breakage, and that if they use a comb it should have rounded, widely spaced teeth.

The people in our clinical studies were advised to completely dry their hair and scalp before applying ROGAINE® products. However, we understand that's not always possible. We suggest that you at least towel-dry your hair before applying ROGAINE® products so that your hair is no longer dripping.

Feel free to use a hair dryer after showering, but make sure ROGAINE® is allowed to dry naturally. Drying before the treatment has absorbed into your scalp can cause it to evaporate and lose effectiveness. Just keep in mind, regular use of high heat can also damage your existing hair.

Sure. Just be sure to wait at least 4 hours after application before taking the plunge, or engaging in any physical activity involving excessive sweating. There’s no need to apply an extra dose of ROGAINE® after swimming.

No. But we recommend wearing a hat if you plan on spending a significant amount of time in the sun, to avoid sunburn. Just wait until ROGAINE® is completely dry before putting a hat on, as the product could stain the fabric. Don’t use sunscreens or sun-blocking agents on the scalp.
